Tint is one of the most common car mods in Canberra, and also one of the easiest to get wrong. Go too dark on the wrong window and you're up for a defect notice and a re-tint — so it pays to know the rules before you book.
It's measured as VLT
Tint darkness is measured by VLT — visible light transmittance, the percentage of light that passes through the glass. Lower number means darker film. Factory glass already has some tint, so the film you add stacks on top of that.
The limits change front to back
- Windscreen: no general tint film — only a dark band across the very top is allowed.
- Front side windows: must stay relatively light so you're clearly visible; a minimum light-transmission level applies (commonly 35% across Australia).
- Rear side windows and rear screen: can generally go darker.
Reflective or mirror-look film is restricted too. Because the exact figures and any medical-exemption rules can change, confirm the current ACT limits with Access Canberra before committing to a shade.
Why cheap tint costs more
Budget film is where regret lives — it goes purple, bubbles and peels within a couple of Canberra summers, and non-compliant film can fail an inspection. Quality film (including ceramic) holds its colour, blocks more heat and UV, and won't interfere with your phone or keyless signals.
Get it done properly
A good installer will tell you what's legal for each window, cut the film to fit and back the work with a warranty. That's cheaper than paying twice.
